Writing: Here is the short synapsis of what this book is about. A slave tries to runaway from the plantation to see his family. He is being chased by the plantation owner and his son. Right when the slave owner captures the slave, the slave is saved by a mysterious (and lightning fast) gun slinger.
That is the short of it. Overall it was a decent story but only glimpses of the characters are given in this first book so its really hard to say where this is going to go. Maybe that's a good thing and will bring us back for more.
Artwork: I don't think I liked this artwork as much as some of the prior Americanime books that we've received but it is pretty decent though.
Overall: 3 stars. We weren't given a lot of insight in issue #1, but I think there is potential for some good action in future issues.
Ron Miller
Writing: This story appears to take place right before the American Civil War. I am a little confused as to who the second gunslinger was, but I think that was intentional. We are given a glimpse into the character of the Bounty Killer, but only enough to whet our appetite.
Artwork: While I am not usually a fan of heavily shaded black and white, or more appropriately gray, artwork, it really worked well for this story. There were enough defined lines in the scenes that I did not find myself squinting to try and sharpen the picture.
Overall: 3 stars. This book had an interesting start. I'm curious to see how it unfolds.
Robert Weiman
Writing: This was a sparse first issue, but I thought it worked. I was drawn into the story and found myself really interested in what type of person the bounty killer is. The story was pretty straightforward with not too much trying to be addressed in the first issue. I found the main character both intriguing as well as mysterious. This one worked for me.
Artwork: The artwork was very effectively done for a greyscale publication. I found the lines to be both stark as well as expressive and very easy to follow.
Overall: 4 stars. This issue worked for me. I was drawn into the story fairly quickly and found myself really enjoying this title.
